Hari Raya, also known as Eid al-Fitr, is the most important and significant festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. It comes at the end of a whole month of fasting called the holy month of Ramadan.
It begins with Muslim families visiting the mosque in the morning. They then proceed to visit cemeteries to pay respects to their dearly departed. Hari Raya is an entire month of celebration with open houses by families everywhere!
Hari Raya is also a reason for the famous ‘Balik Kampung’ season. Many people travel to their hometowns or ‘Kampung’ to visit their families, especially those who are working in urban areas but are from rural spots in Malaysia.
This tends to create massive traffic jams but it’s all part of the festivity and is often embraced by Malaysians in a good way.
And of course, not forgetting the fact that this season is when all the ‘Duit Raya’ or money packets and ‘Kuih Raya’ or Raya cookies come out.
